چکیده

Optimised virtual keyboards are potentially efficient and fast for expert users, but they are difficult and slow for novice users due to the visual search requirement. Introducing structure and order to the layout may ease the visual searching process. By means of a Metropolis algorithm with an added alphabetical bias term to the Fitts-digraph energy function previously used (Zhai, Hunter, & Smith, 2000), we designed a keyboard layout with alphabetical ordering tendency with little movement efficiency cost. In contrast to previous efforts that failed to find any alphabetical ordering advantage, our experiment demonstrated that the alphabetical ordering created by our design method indeed improves novice users’ performance and was preferred by most participants.

Performance Optimization of Virtual Keyboards

Text entry has been a bottleneck of nontraditional computing devices. One of the promising methods is the virtual keyboard for touch screens. Correcting previous estimates on virtual keyboard efficiency in the literature, we estimated the potential performance of the existing QWERTY, FITALY, and OPTI designs of virtual keyboards to be in the neighborhood of 28, 36, and 38 words per minute (wpm)...

Text Entry in Immersive Head-Mounted Display-based Virtual Reality using Standard Keyboards

We study the performance and user experience of two popular mainstream text entry devices, desktop keyboards and touchscreen keyboards, for use in Virtual Reality (VR) applications. We discuss the limitations arising from limited visual feedback, and examine the efficiency of different strategies of use. We analyze a total of 24 hours of typing data in VR from 24 participants and find that novi...

Nessi: An EEG-Controlled Web Browser for Severely Paralyzed Patients

We have previously demonstrated that an EEG-controlled web browser based on self-regulation of slow cortical potentials (SCPs) enables severely paralyzed patients to browse the internet independently of any voluntary muscle control. However, this system had several shortcomings, among them that patients could only browse within a limited number of web pages and had to select links from an alpha...

SliceType: Fast Gaze Typing with a Merging Keyboard

Jitter is an inevitable byproduct of gaze detection. Because of this, gaze typing tends to be a slow and frustrating process. In this paper, we propose SliceType, an on-screen keyboard that is optimized for gaze input. Our main objective is to use the screen area more efficiently. We achieve this by determining the keys that will not be used for the next input, and allocating their space to adj...

Investigating the efficacy of brain training by using virtual reality and real shooting on the shooting skills of students of a military university

Background and Aim: High quality, fast-paced and cost-effective training of novice military personnel is a major concern in most armed forces around the world. Hence, implementing psycho-technological findings is important in the armed forces. This study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy of brain-training (neurofeedback) and virtual-reality training through the use of actual and vir...
